The much awaited and anticipated Hero Honda Karizma FI has finally broken cover. The new Karizma which is expected anytime soon, gets a host of features but still feels lackluster compared to the Bajaj Pulsar 220. There is still no digital instrumentation and the fairing is a rip off from the Suzuki Hayabusa.

It has a full fairing and it looks down right ugly, seems like half way through the designing process they figured out that a new full fairing would some how look cool, so they took lots of plastic (yes loads of it) gave it some monstrous alien look and used some feviquick to paste it with the body.

The result looks like an alien with a huge head and skinny lower body (see the pics and you would understand what I am talking about) and wait its not over yet from what I have read they have retained the same engine with a slight up in the power, courtesy of FI, so lets do a bit of mathematics shall we?

Say with the new FI the power goes up by 3 bhp (might be more but am quite doubtful about that) and add to it the bulky fairing which must be of some 1299836 metric tonnes. So the power to weight ratio if am not wrong should be more or else like the old ZMA, no no guys our misery is still not over, sources claim that it would cost in excess of one lakh. So basically HH expects us to shell out over 1 lakh for the new ZMA which looks basically the same except for a new full AERODYNAMIC fairing (sarcasm involved) Ok lets says I am wrong and theres a huge power gain so what ..it still looks down right ugly.

When the competition is getting so ahead, why has Hero Honda done a panic job. They seemed to be in a hurry and its more like they woke up last night and said, lets launch a new Karizma with real changes and not just new stickers.

Yamaha India has launched performance parts for the Yamaha R15 and the Ymaha FZ16. However what do the Yamaha racing kits consist of? Re-mapped ECU, High-lift cam-shaft, Full exhaust system, Special alloy sprockets, Adjustable Foot rests, Larger diameter petal disc front brake, Stainless steel brake hose and Race-spec master brake oil cylinder are the parts which can soon be on your Yamaha bike.

Re-mapped ECU

The R15 chassis always felt under-used with that puny 150cc liquid-cooled motor and every time on the track it felt like the bike could do with more horses. Well, that is the focus of the advanced ECU in the performance kit. The rev-limiter has been moved further and instead of 9,800rpm cut-in point of the stock ECU, the race-prepped ECU kicks-in only after the rev-counter needle breezes past the 12,800rpm mark. And that makes a hell of a lot of difference! Yamaha has developed this special ECU which is tuned and mapped to suit the other performance upgrades that come in the package. However, the ECU has been configured with a prefixed map canceling out the great opportunity of allowing the end-user to program it according to his own liking and needs. How we would love to see a programmable ECU on offer! Maybe that’s the next thing in line from Yamaha.

Yes! You read it right. The package also boasts of a high-lift cam which provides better flow of air-fuel mixture by getting the valve further out of the way than stock. The altered ECU further helps in smoothening out the extra power produced by the engine and care has been taken that the high-lift camshaft does not put strain on the valvetrain.

This one will be a big seller. Loud, throaty and adds instant punch to the bike. The full exhaust system is a bolt-on part and immediately improves low-end torque and power delivery. And one thing is for sure, you can’t sneak into your home after a late night ride, ’cause this stainless steel muffler will wake up your entire neighbourhood. It’s short, sweet and smart as a whip. And yes, this is a race track only feature as is the ECU because of both useability in traffic and also the noise level is above the permissible street limit of 80db.

Duralumin Special Alloy Sprockets

The key factor behind R15’s mind-blowing performance and handling has always been its superlight frame. Yamaha has kept this focus on its after-market parts too and the sprockets are no exception to this. As of now, there are two options for the rear sprockets with 40 teeth and 42 teeth, made out of lightweight special alloy called Duralumin. The product line-up hasn’t been confirmed for the sprockets yet, as Yamaha has plans to introduce multiple sprocket options depending upon the demand and need of the users.

Brake upgrades

Braking was phenomenal on the stock bike too, but the bigger 296mm diameter petal disc upfront coupled with a stainless steel braided brake hose, put the R15’s brakes into a different league altogether. The feel has improved significantly and the bike inspires a lot of confidence under hard-braking and mid-corner speed-shedding, dropping braking times and distances by a big margin over the stock bike. The kit also includes a la MotoGP race-bike style master brake oil cylinder. The improved power and braking demands stickier rubber though than the stock tyres can deliver and this is a sore spot worthy of being treated. Exactly a year ago, many were stunned with the performance of the tyres employed on the R15 and were raving mad about them. However, the stock tyres now seem to be struggling to cope with the added horses.

The package also includes a racing quick throttle that reduces the total travel angle of the throttle from the stock bike’s 90 degrees to 60 degrees. The quick throttle helps in reducing throttle actuation time and provides quicker response from the bike with minimal movement of the wrist. A boon for racers.

Apart from the performance boosting bits to the drivetrain, Yamaha have thoughtfully provided one very critical upgrade to the bike which is exquisitely crafted rear set footrests. This positional placement of foot rest with allied linkages perfectly optimized for gear shifter and rear brake pedal is most welcome and highly recommended. It is three-way adjustable depending on rider preference and comfort.

The entire kit works in perfect harmony as the high-lift cam, ECU, the exhaust and the sprockets all have been tuned to work together to give the best possible performance. All of this sincerely satisfies the needs of a serious track-enthusiast or the newbie racer. To match the go, Yamaha is also offering an HID headlight kit for that added bling factor!

Yamaha are yet to determine the exact costs, since the parts will be imported directly from Daytona (the firm) in Japan and thus we have no word on pricing. However we estimate it to be around Rs. 25,000/- Yamaha will start taking orders from July for these parts by email and via their website. The parts will be available by September and trained technicians at Yamaha dealerships will install these parts on the customer bikes.

Yamaha To Launch R15 & FZ16 Racing Kits

The TVS Apache RTR 180 is expected to be launched in June, 2009, that is this month itself and BikeIndia got their hands on the beast. Checkout what they have to say after the jump. You can checkout the pictures of the bike here.

Blast full throttle down the half a kilometer straight, brake, shift down and dip the bike into the long sweeping right hander. Then shift weight, lean towards your left and twist the right wrist to charge down the straight again. TVS’s test track at Hosur is as simple to learn as that except for the two rather uneven troughs – one in the middle of the long arc and another at the left hander exit. Perfect to appreciate one of the two most significant changes incorporated in the new Apache RTR 180 as compared to its predecessor.

The new bike’s wheelbase is longer than the 160 by a good 40mm, making it substantially more stable and confidence inspiring than its earlier iteration when leaned over. In its newest avatar the RTR feels more stable and planted both in a straight line as well as around bends. Both the bumps on the track, which made us cautious during the first few laps, were taken in its stride with disdain. I managed to ride the 180 and the 160 RTRs on the track back-to-back and the difference in the handling characteristics was clearly perceptible. Not that the older RTR felt scary around the bumps, but the new bike augments the feeling of confidence and makes you push harder without any worries.

Another, more obvious improvement is the bigger capacity engine. The new 177.4cc mill is a bored out variation of the 160cc mill and has a longer stroke too. With 62.5mm bore and 57.8mm stroke, the new engine still remains an oversquare, screamer unit but not so much so as the 160. Power is up by 1.9PS to 17.3PS and the new engine produces 2.4 more units of twisting force at 15.5Nm. Peak power is produced at 8500rpm similar to RTR 160, though the peak torque is now produced at 6500 revs, 500 more than the carburetted variant of the bike’s smaller capacity version.

The difference between the acceleration of the two machines too was easily observable. The increased power and torque makes itself very palpable especially while accelerating hard from a standstill. However, the new bike somehow doesn’t feel as free-revving as its predecessor. Down the straight on the test track, before braking, the 180 showed a speed of 120km/h on the digital display while the 160 was marginally slower at 118km/h. Tech boffins at TVS admitted that they have not worked towards increasing the top speed of the bike but to increase it’s low and midrange grunt as well as in-gear acceleration times. It’s quite evident that they have hit the bull’s eye. For those who were expecting something more hardcore than what’s been described here, we must mention that the new RTR doesn’t have a rev limiter. Rev the bike hard in neutral or in the first gear and the tacho needle keeps swinging to the 12,000rpm limit on the tacho. That’s good news as the absence of a limiter hints at introduction of performance kits for the bike by the company in the near future. Hooligans rejoice!

Technically, worth a mention are the newly developed TVS Srichakra tubeless tyres both upfront as well as at the rear. The new tyres are wider (90/90 x 17-inch front and 110/80 x 17-inch rear) but thanks to the new construction, they are also much lighter than the tubed tyres they replace. The fact, along with the incorporation of a lighter crank employed in the engine, means that the overall weight of the bike remains unchanged. The weight gain due to the increased wheelbase has been neutralised by the lighter tyres and the lighter crankshaft. We found the new Srichakra tyres fabulously sticky on the grippy surface of TVS’ test facility. However, as I tried to lift the rear wheel of the new bike, the front tyre tended to skid a bit. True, with a longer wheelbase, the new bike should be a tad more difficult to lift up from the rear but it shouldn’t ideally have taken as much effort as it did. Not that the new RTR refuses to get its rear wheel airborne, but more grip at the front tyre would have facilitated that more easily. Other technical changes include a 270mm petal disc at the front and a 200mm petal disc at the rear as standard equipment. Carburetion duties have been handed over to the Mikuni BS-29 carburettor. There isn’t a FI version available for this bike and we don’t see one coming in the near future.

On the visual front, the new bike witnesses an array of changes on its body. The 180 adorns a new graphic scheme to distinguish itself from its smaller siblings with ‘RTR’ emblazoned boldly on the tank scoops. The front forks and the gas reservoirs for the rear shocks are now painted in a new golden shade and the clip-ons have a new RTR 180 emblem at the centre. Other cosmetic upgrades include a new slim, superbike style, trident shaped mud flap under the rear fender. It can be replaced by the conventional, more functional mud flap for those who’re conscious of mud spraying during the monsoons. The rear-set footpegs for the rider as well as the pillion come in two forms. You may either have a racing style naked metallic set or get them covered with a rubber cover for better cushioning. The tacho dial for the new bike is painted in a sporty white shade as against the black-grey-white theme for the 160 FI.

The new bike feels more planted and substantial right from the moment you set it in motion. It’s got more grunt, more grip and more poise. We are quite sure that it’ll give its rivals a good run for its money when we pit them against in the coming issues. The prices have not been announced yet, but we expect the new bike to be priced a tad cheaper than the RTR 160 FI priced at rupees 74 grand. We have not yet been able to benchmark the new TVS thoroughbred against the other performance bikes in the country, but expect us to do that as soon as the machine arrives to us for a test. Till then, from what we can make out, the new TVS 180 looks like a potent contender in the Indian performance bike arena.

Honda Launches Jazz In India

The much awaited Honda Jazz is here, Honda India have just launched the Jazz in the Indian market. The Jazz is priced between Rs 6.98 lakh and Rs 7.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the nation’s most expensive ‘super-mini’ will be available in six colours and three types in manual transmission - Jazz, Jazz Mode and Jazz Active.

The journey of the first generation Jazz, in fact, started in 2001 with its debut launch in Japan. The car, which is now being sold in more than 130 countries across the globe, has hit the Indian roads in its second generation avatar. In its new avatar, the Jazz comes with a 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine which, the company claims, has been specially developed for the Indian market. The four-cylinder engine features programmed fuel injection that delivers maximum output of 90 PS (66 kW) @ 6,200 rpm and torque of 110 Nm (11.2 kg-m) @ 4800 rpm while giving fuel economy of 16.1 km/l, as per ARAI test data. The new engine is also E10 compatible and has Euro IV emission levels.

Jazz is available in 5-speed manual transmission with gear ratios optimized for a sporty driving experience, while ensuring fuel economy. According to the company, the drive by wire throttle control system enables precise control of the vehicle while driving. The Jazz chassis realizes both superior ride comfort and agile handling. The car features a McPherson strut suspension in the front. The H-shaped torsion beam rear suspension achieves the maximum possible space for the rear seats and cargo area as well as steady ride comfort and agile handling.

The Honda Jazz also comes fully loaded with various active and passive safety features including ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-Force Distribution System), Dual SRS airbags and pre-tensioner seat belts. Honda’s pedestrian-injury reduction body design helps protect pedestrians from injury in the event of a collision.

According to the company, the exterior styling concept of Jazz is an advanced super forward cabin and dynamic forward leaning form which is intended to express both spaciousness and dynamic motion. The big front quarter windows, slim front pillar and integrated rear head rest provide clear visibility in all directions for more comfortable and safe driving.

The Honda Jazz comes with a new-age interior design which is sophisticated and exciting with advanced functionality including a tilt steering column for ensuring comfortable driving position for all drivers, keyless entry with answer back, integrated audio equipment with MP3/ CD and Aux-in, steering mounted audio controls, auto volume by speed, magic seats and driver’s footrest. The car also comes with a 2+2 years or 80,000 kms warranty and 4 years’ roadside assistance as standard value for all Jazz buyers.
